About The Drawn to medicine retreat

Drawn To Medicine is a 5 day / 4 night gathering at Lumeria Maui retreat center to be held November 2 through 6, 2026. We designed this event for a small group of physicians who feel similar strains of dis-ease and fatigue from their work and desire an opportunity to share learnings, provide mutual support, and practice transformation through art.

Registration fees include 4 nights lodging, daily breakfast and dinner, and art workshops including movement / dance, writing, and drawing and private coaching sessions with Coach Seinberg. Participants are eligible for up to 10 hours of CME credits provided through Advancing Knowledge in Healthcare. Travel to and from Maui is not included.

Lumeria Maui is a luxury educational retreat center and stunning oasis of tranquility that connects people with the sacred 'aina and mystery of Maui through its experiential classes & programs. Lumeria is located on six magnificently landscaped ocean view acres, just outside of the seaside village of Paia on Maui’s North Shore. The 1909 historic building was completely restored and features 24 luxurious guest accommodations.

Drawn to Medicine Retreat Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the ways in which medical training and the US healthcare system contribute to physician anguish and fatigue

  • Explain the concepts of moral stress, moral distress and moral injury and how each can contribute to the psychological strain experienced by healthcare workers; left unaddressed, these conditions can result in burnout and attrition

  • Understand embodiment philosophy and how embodiment practices can address personal and collective harms including moral distress and moral injury

  • Explain how different expressive arts including writing, drawing and dance function as embodiment tools for processing emotion, reducing stress, and enhancing self-awareness

  • Describe the physiologic changes associated with artistic practice, both as a receiver and creator, and how these changes are associated with improved health and wellbeing by alleviating emotional strain and psychological rigidity

  • Practice observational skills through drawing and writing, resulting in different abilities to notice variation, a key to clinical diagnostic skills

  • Recognize intentionality as a strategy for sustaining wellbeing in times of stress and understand the physiologic changes associated with intentional practices

  • Identify and develop at least one personalized expressive arts practices and create intention to integrate that practice into a routine

Sam McWilliams is an acclaimed tattooist and renowned botanical artist and instructor from San Francisco, California. Sam excels at botanical and nature-inspired designs, birds, text, precise lines, fine details, and many other styles. She has a BFA with High Distinction in painting and drawing from California College of the Arts, and studied botanical drawing on Kauai at the National Tropical Botanical Garden with the team at Draw Botanical.

Activity Overview
The Drawn to Medicine Physician Retreat is a 5-day restorative and enriching experience for physicians seeking to enhance their mental health and build resilience through artistic embodiment practices. Through small group reflection, mindfulness tools, and creative art practices, including writing, drawing, and dance, participants gain greater understanding of interventions that can help reduce stress and anxiety and sustain and improve clinical practice. Prior to the retreat, participants gather virtually to explore retreat themes through readings and group reflection, identify personal strengths and opportunities, and generate cohort relationships. During the retreat, participants receive individual coaching sessions to discuss goals, learnings, and insights.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for practicing physicians involved in direct patient care who experience ethical conflict, burnout, or compassion fatigue in their professional roles.

Criteria for Success
There is a fee to participate in this activity. A certificate of completion will be awarded based on the participant's attendance and completion of the online evaluation/claim credit form.
